Battiocaloa district is packed with three picture perfect lagoons; The Battiocaloa Lagoon, the Valaichchenai Lagoon and the Vaharai Lagoon. the Battiocaola lagoon is the largest among them with an estimated length of 56 km, and is recorded to be the largest lagoon in Sri Lanka.
Location
The lagoon is located in the Battiocaloa district in eastern Sri Lanka. The city is located in the land between the lagoon and the Indian ocean. The lagoon being one of the major attractions of the city is often visited by tourists staying in hotels in Passikuda such as Uga Bay.
Overview
The lagoon greatly fed on rainwater although it collects water from several nearby streams. The lagoon opens up to the ocean in two points; one in Kallar close to the border separating Battiocoala and Ampara districts and the other in Palameenmadu, close to the Battiocaloa town.
What to expect
The lagoon has a dense mangrove plantation and patches or wet grasslands while are ideal breeding grounds for shrimps and fish. Further a variety of migratory and local bird species are known to roam the lagoon.
Lagoon activities
Visitors in the area may engage in various recreational activities including visits to the echo park, fishing, boating and photography. Boats could be hired in the bank.
