There isn’t a bounty of famous Sri Lankans around the world, but two siblings that are truly recognised throughout the planet for their achievements would be the Bawa Brothers.
Geoffrey Bawa
He was one of the most influential and accomplished architects of his generation, and pioneered a concept known as ‘tropical modernism’. His work can be found all over the world, in nations such as Japan, Egypt, Mauritius, Singapore and Sri Lanka, where there’s many a Geoffrey Bawa hotel to be found such as Anantara Kalutara Resort.
Lunuganga
This was the country house of Geoffrey Bawa, this house was his ultimate passion project and he built this for over four decades, from around 1949 till his death in 2003. The estate is now managed by a group of his close friends, and its beauty can be experienced by the general public.
Bevis Bawa
Bevis was the older brother and was a soldier before becoming a landscaper. He developed his interest in landscaping while managing and developing the Brief Estate, which belonged to his father at the time.
The Brief Estate
This was Bevis Bawa’s most iconic accomplishment and is an absolutely majestic example of tropical landscaping. It was visited by notable figures such as Laurence Olivier and Agatha Christie.
