Beruwala is a quaint coastal fishing town in Sri Lanka and is a popular vacation destination loved by the tourists and locals alike.
Beruwala
You went to Beruwala, stayed at a typical Sri Lanka resort, lounged on the sands and enjoyed its beaches, don’t pack up and leave just yet. One thing that most travellers miss out on experiencing is the truly authentic experience one gets at the local markets and hubs. And when it comes to Beruwala, it is none other than the fishing harbour.
The Harbour
If you are an early riser and staying at a place like Cinnamon Bey Beruwala, you are in luck. Walk to the harbour in the wee mornings and you will get to see the fresh catches of the day being hauled in, by the fishermen who were up way before you and got their job for the day done.
Painting the scene
The colourful canoes and boats line up along the harbour and make for a very loud yet cheerful fish market. All types of marine life, from squids to king prawns and salmons can be found here, and rest assured, it is all fresh.
What to look out for
The only warning you need before you step into the market is the smell, it can be overbearing as the sun comes up, so try to make your visit as early as possible to miss the stenches. And also, don’t forget to take your camera!
