Galle Fort
Built-in 1588 by the Portuguese, further fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards, the Galle Fort lives on as the largest standing fortress in Asia built by European colonizers. It’s worth even a day trip from Colombo to visit the Fort with its bastions, ramparts, old churches, lighthouse, and quaint cobbled streets dotted with scores of restaurants, shops, and residences.
Jungle Beach
Located between Galle and Unawatuna, this stunning beach is the perfect hideaway to enjoy the beauty of lapping sea waves, huge rocks, and golden sand. Getting to Jungle Beach is a wonderful journey. You will have to walk for a few minutes through a jungle to reach this idyllic beach. If you are holidaying at one of the many hotels in Galle the likes of The Fortress Resort and Spa, you can reach this beach in a little more than 20 minutes.
Flag Rock
This is the best place to catch a gorgeous sunset when you are in Galle Fort. This Flag Rock was once a Portuguese bastion. During the weekends, many tourists, as well as locals gather around this place to witness how an experienced local jump off the rock into the deep waters beneath!
