Phuket, the largest island of Thailand, is a charming tropical beauty with its unspoiled landscapes. Picturesque views of the island and the tropical lushness of Phuket make it a divine place to visit. Apart from the marvellous beauty of the island, the newest attraction of the island is the Big Buddha statue. It has now become one of the island’s most significant and sacred landmarks. This magnificent Big Buddha is located on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata, and it soars 45 metres tall with a base diameter of 25 metres. Hence, it catches the eye even from far away. The statue is looking towards Phang Nga Bay in the east, with its back to the Andaman Sea.
The history behind building this enormous statue is quite interesting. The idea of putting up such a big creation has come to a bunch of friends, almost a decade ago, while walking through the forest of Nakkerd hills between Chalong and Kata. They were mesmerised by the panorama of the island. After discussing over and over again, they all agreed that this would be the perfect view point to put up their project.
Approximately 30 million baht was spent on building this huge statue and funds came entirely from donations. If you come to visit this amazing site, you would be captivated as the site offers you the best 360-degree view of this island. With a peaceful atmosphere around the landmark, the only sound audible are the tinkling of small bells, yellow Buddhist flags and the soft dhamma music in the background. The whole statue is beautifully layered with white Burmese marble, giving a shine to this breathtaking Big Buddha.
If you are heading over to discover the beauty of big Buddha, it’s open from 8.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. And if you want to catch a glimpse of the spectacular sunset try to be there before 6.30 p.m. Thinking how to find the place? There is nothing to worry because the road to the site is decorated with red and white signs to make sure you get there easily.
