The Indonesian city of Ubud on the island of Bali is one of the prime tourist attractions in the entire country. Home to over thirty thousand people, Ubud is situated in the heart of Bali, away from the pristine sun kissed beaches and resorts such as Anantara Seminyak Bali Resort & Spa, but replete with artistic distractions and a rich culture. It is a welcoming town for those staying at a Bali resort and wish to luxuriate in art, enjoy yoga and reconnect with nature. Ubud is also home to a number of attractions such as the Elephant Cave located in close proximity to the Bedulu Village. Also known locally as Goa Gajah, this Cave can be dated as far back as 300 BC. A visit to the Ubud Monkey Forest will allow travellers to explore the beautiful forests and natural surroundings of the city while other attractions such as the Blanco Renaissance Museum can be visited for an insight into Balinese art.
The Blanco Renaissance Museum is housed in the home of the late Don Antonio Blanco. As can be predicted, the Museum houses Blanco paintings and collages as well as illustrated poetry. Since the Museum is a private residence, the experience is of a different kind. The experience commences with the location of the Museum on a hilltop with an amazing view of the valley below. Since the primary and favourite subject of the artist was nude Balinese women, the collections of artwork are predominantly nude portraits albeit colourful and striking. This collection can be viewed for 50, 000 rupiahs and visitors will note that a second artist, possibly Blanco’s son, Mario, also contributed to the collection. While the house itself is striking in terms of architecture, it is matched by the stunning collections of art that are on display.
For the ardent and enthusiastic artist, books regarding Blanco and his style can be purchased at the Museum. Patrons can refresh themselves at the small Museum café and also purchase a few souvenirs at the gift shop.
