Nestled in South of Negombo, covering an area of 6000 hectares, Murthurajawela marsh is a must visit on your trip to the west coast of Sri Lanka. Out of the amphibians present here the most common are the water monitor, lizard and two species of geckos. The star tortoise known to be a dry zone species is also found here. Home to 25 % of the mammal species found in the island the marsh boasts of fishing cats and slender loris. Various mangrove plants, flora and fauna give a rainforest atmosphere to this area. With all this and more to see, a boat ride to Muthurajawela would easily seem like traveling through the amazon, only a little less complicated.
