History
A common man or woman couldn’t even get a peek into the garden back in the days and now, regardless of who they are, anyone can enjoy the most impressive and gigantic botanical garden on the island.
Walking in
A vast collection of orchids, an avenue of royal palms fit for the king, the cannonball fruit tree and the Burma bamboo which towers 40m high are the main attractions within the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. The huge lawn in the garden also has an elephantine Javan fig tree which has so many big branches that it looks like an umbrella for a giant.
What to expect
Your companions through the walk in the gardens will mostly be fruit bats, countless monkeys and unfortunately, cosy couples. A cafeteria inside the gardens serves both Sri Lankan and Western food, but stocking up on picnic items are more fun. Accessibility
The clock tower bus stop in Kandy has a bus that drops you right outside the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and a three-wheeler from Kandy to the gardens costs about Rs.400 or more.
