Bali has a large number of temples located on the coastal lines that worships the gods of the sea. All of these temples are actually linked from each them you can see the other sea temples on the coastline. Pura Luhur Uluwatu actually means a holy temple on the edge of a rock. The temple is located in steep cliff that looks over the Southern part of the Balinese beach. The cliff is as high up as 250m from the sea level. Pura Luhur is a significant part of Southern Bali as it is recognized as a Balinese directional temple that wards off evil spirits from entering into the Southwest region. Since it is a holy shrine visitors are requested to wear a sarong before entering the premises. There are sarongs available at the temple gates.
The history behind the temple was that it was built by a Javanese Hindu guru named Empu Kuturan around the 10th century. The temple overlooks a stunning Bali beach and the sea waves crashing against the cliff is beautiful to watch. Tourists will definitely enjoy watching the sunset from the top of the rock as it is simply breathtaking. The major attraction of the temple is the Kecak and fire dancing ritual. The performance is quite unique as there is a group of bare-chested men who will chant to a rhythm repeatedly while the fire dance performance takes place. The performance is usually at the time of sunset as it is a surreal experience which you should see when you visit the temple.
Pura Luhur is located in a remote region and its best to arrange with a travel agent or with the hotel if you want to make a trip to the temple. Try and arrange for your travel plans so that you always have a ride back to your hotel because getting a ride back is a bit difficult. The entrance fee is very affordable and visitors must be prepared to wear a sarong before coming in to the temple. Beware of the monkeys that skit across the premises, they may look friendly but they grab on to anything they may get attracted to. Visitors who are interested in seeing the temple should find a resort in Kuta that is closest to Pura Luhur. A Kuta beach resort would be ideal because you could enjoy the tropical Balinese cuisine and soak up the sun while you’re at it. A hotel that is sure to offer you luxurious rooms and the perfect beach getaway is Sheraton Bali Kuta Resorts.
