You’re on your tropical holiday enjoying that particular temperate bliss only found at an Ayurveda hotel. Sri Lanka; in particular its southern coast that is blessed with such places like Amba Ayurveda Boutique Hotel. In the midst of your healing process you wish to experience something out of the box. You’re in luck. The Brief Garden which used to belong to the brother of famed architect Geoffrey Bawa, is an unconventional garden full of unusual sculptures, art and beautiful landscapes.
Bevis Bawa was a landscape artist as gifted as his brother and loved to live a life of indulgence amidst his own heaven on earth, a beautiful bungalow set in a picturesque garden which he created himself. Bevis Bawa invited many artists and art lovers from his lot of artistic friends and they added their unique touch to the place.
The Brief Garden lies just 10 kilometres from the touristic town Bentota. The garden is full of tropical foliage, massive trees, pathways concealed by artful shrubbery, sweet smelling fruit trees and flowering vine. The house and secret corners of the garden itself create apt resting places to the multitude of delicately carved sculptures and series of paintings depicting the Sri Lankan way of life in the time of Bawa.
The garden still retains the sensual vibes of its glory days when the likes of Vivien Leigh (the actress who played Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind), Laurence Olivier and Australian artist Donald Friend frequented its beautiful lanes and lawns.
A walk in the Brief Garden is a walk taken back in time, as you see in your mind’s eye a haze of lethargic evenings with intoxicating drinks in hand while the barbecue pits emanated mouth-watering aromas to passionate nights under the stars. It will be a brief interlude in a garden locked in time.
