Grotto Santa Maria
This popular pilgrimage site is well known for its “14 Stations of the Cross”; it features limestone statues depicting incidents from the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The trail leads to a cave that has a statue of the Virgin Mary, while there’s a charming chapel here as well.
The Grand Mosque of the Sultan of Riau
Located on Penyengat Island, this 19th century mosque has a rather distinctive yellow and green exterior. Known as the “‘Jewel of the Island” it is also home to a handwritten Quran that is said to be more than 150 years old.
