The ruins of this 200 year old cotton plantation form a striking backdrop against the modern day Providential or Provo as the island is better known as. The Cheshire Hall Loyalist Plantation National Historic Site was opened for the public in the year 2003, in an attempt to encourage the locals and the visitors to appreciate the natural history and the historical; roots of the country.
These carefully preserved ruins offer some of the best bird eye views of the island and having withstood the toll of time they retell the story of a bygone era. You are sure to stumble across the plantation’s Great House and several outhouses. Situated on top of a hill, overlooking the valley below the Great House overlooks Western Provo. A little time on top of the hill and a vivid imagination is all you need, in order to recreate the past in all its glory right in front of your eyes. The lush greenery that surrounds the plantation site is also home to birds, butterflies, lizards and the kind making it a bio diversity hotspot.
Traces of the original stone wall could be still found along the boundaries of the plantation through the overgrown bushes. Walking down the shady trails is a good time to closely examine the craftsmanship of the buildings. The white plaster that covers the exterior of the building was made mostly using soft limestone mixed with sand. Walking towards the north of the hill, you may stumble across carefully placed cannon, most probably used to safe guard the slaves and the masters from outside attacks. The mystery of the primitive drawings found on the sloops that fascinates the visitor is yet to be unraveled. Up to date Cheshire Hall remains one of Provo’s most cherished cultural properties and a very promising tourist attraction.
Famously dubbed ‘Beautiful by Nature’ this breath-taking isle draws thousands of tourists each year. If you wish to spoil and pamper yourself, a trip to Provo must top your list.
