This museum was opened in 2005 and it replaced the ancient Chongqing Museum. The new museum, Three Gorges, houses exhibits which are cultural relics unearthed during the construction of the Three Gorges Dam project, and the exhibits which were already on display at the old Chongqing Museum. This institution is the biggest monographic museum in China and it is famous as an institution which plays a major role in the history and the culture of the country by promoting research, archaeological excavations and undertaking of education. The Three Gorges complex in Chongqing spreads across 42,497 square metres and the exhibition hall area is 23,225 square metres.
