The historically significant Dapeng Fortress is a renowned cultural attraction in the eastern part of the Chinese city of Shenzhen. Initially constructed in the time of rule of the Ming Dynasty, the fortress lays claim to a historical legacy of more than six centuries.
The fort was originally built to defend the locality from Japanese pirates and it has a successful record in this endeavour. To overcome these marauding pirates who prowled the coastal regions bordering Guangdong, the imperial authorities constructed this fortification to defend the expansive region which includes the present day Hong Kong and Shenzhen. With a height of no less than 6 m and a total area of approximately 100,000 sqm, the fortress is an impressive sight. Its sturdy walls are composed of bluestone blocks and granite.
Today, the fort is an oasis of ancient architecture and design within a bustling modern city. Although some have the misconception that the Shenzhen formerly was nothing more than an inconsequential town, the existence of such a magnificent fortress suggests otherwise.
Visitors will be captivated by the Dapeng Fortress Museum, which presents many interesting exhibits relating to the fort and its history. Here, you will find written material, illustrations, and photographs relating to the eventful past of the fortress. Despite the fact that much of the documentation is old and has deteriorated, the exhibits still portray the past glory of the edifice.
In an interesting incident in 1839, British maritime forces commenced a sudden attack on the local naval forces. Despite having antiquated boats and equipment, the Chinese forces, fighting from fishing vessels, managed to overcome the aggressors. This incident is considered to be the starting point of the long drawn out Opium Wars.
Today the visitor will see narrow lanes and pathways within the fortress, lined with residential houses which feature intricate carvings and black tile work. This serenely laidback environment will present the visitor with a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the modern city within which it is located.
