Seychelles may not be a very large country in terms of the sizes of some others on the world map, yet few can boast of such dense forestry covering such large expanses of the land that falls under one flag. Before one can digest the beauty of the beaches and the shoreline, one is exposed to another gift of nature in the forms of sanctuaries and jungle reserves. To reside in a resort in Seychelles is an experience that teaches you how to appreciate the local lifestyle, the awe in which the locals live and of course the warm hospitality second only to the warmth of the sun.
The AVANI Seychelles Barbarons Resort & Spa is one of the closest abodes to Morne Seychelles National Park which is towards the north-east of the island. The highest peak of Seychelles is within this reserve and visitors are invited to trek upland or along the flatter paths.
The park starts at the northern coast of the largest of the Seychelles islands, Mahe and spreads inland, hence it has mangrove forests, indigenous birds, trees and animals, mountainous terrain and some spectacular views. The journey uphill isn’t as difficult as it sounds but about 100 to 200m into the forest you do feel distant from civilization; when you look ahead and behind you see endless deep greenery and when you look up you realize that you are well shielded from the sun by the widely spread branches of trees.
Be comfortably clad for the trek and though shorts are recommended to ease your movements, beware if you have particularly sensitive skin as the shrubs and undergrowth can irritate you. A bottle of water and maybe some first aid are the only things you should carry with you to avoid being slowed down by weight.
