While Dubai is a modern metropolis with technological advances galore, this destination has still preserved its natural sites which have a rich biodiversity; if your interest has been piqued, here are some of the places you should look to visit!
Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary
Set amidst wetlands which encompass around 2,000 hectares, the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary features both coastal and marine areas that include beaches, seagrass beds and coral reefs. It sustains diverse wildlife such as Arabian gazelles, hawksbill turtles, foxes, camels, various water birds and more. While this site is easy to reach from Palm Jumeirah-based hotel apartments, Dubai adventures here can only be enjoyed through organised visits be it mangrove planting, turtle releases or other such activities.
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
An ideal nature reserve to visit while based in the city at properties like Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary has varying ecosystems be it scrubland, mangroves, sabkhas or mudflats. Recognised by Birdlife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA), this spot is one of the best places for birdwatching in Dubai with around 67 species recorded here. There are three concealed viewing points (or “hides”) from which you have a great chance to spot great egrets, grey herons and flamingos.
Al Qudra Lakes
No trip to Dubai for nature lovers would be complete without exploring the Al Qudra Lakes which are part of a human-made oasis in the desert where flora and fauna thrive. The ecosystem here includes such wildlife as the oryx, foxes and more than 200 bird species including flamingos, swans and the endangered houbara bustard. The idyllic lakes also offer an enchanting backdrop for picnics and even camping, while bicycles can be hired too for some pedal-powered adventures!
Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
More desert escapades await amidst the dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve located just outside the city. Those heading here have a chance to see the endangered Arabian oryx which was once on the brink of extinction but was saved through conservation efforts and breeding programmes including at this reserve. You can embark on a wildlife drive and spot other creatures too like the Arabian red fox, gazelles, and lizards, while camel trekking, horse riding, archery and even falconry can be experienced.
