Planning a Visit
The Brief Garden can be found in the Kalawila Village in Beruwala. It’s around 10 km from Bentota while those staying at a hotel in Kalutara, Sri Lanka including properties such as Mermaid Hotel & Club can easily plan an excursion here. The site is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm and guided tours are available.
The Master Designer
Bevis Bawa was the driving force behind the garden’s unique design and landscaping. The brother of the famed architect Geoffrey Bawa, he transformed a rubber plantation into the masterpiece you see today. His former residence is also here and is where he once entertained the likes of Sir Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh!
A Unique Garden
Those exploring the 20-acre garden have much to look forward to; as you traverse varying paths you will come across areas with diverse trees and plants, fascinating statues, a Japanese garden, a Chinese water garden, ponds and more. You will also find benches and quiet spots where you can just soak up the serenity.
The House Tour
As part of the visit you can tour Bevis Bawa’s home; while the house design with its patios and verandas seamlessly blend with the tropical beauty that surrounds it, inside there are some enthralling paintings, sculptures and photographs and a quite captivating mural.
