Steeped in history, the south coast city of Galle in Sri Lanka offers plenty to discover and here’s a glimpse of what to expect and experience on your visit.
A Bit of History
Before heading to the city, it always helps to know a bit of its history. Its prominent feature is the ancient fort that was first built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, though it was subsequently improved and expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. It’s one of the largest remaining fortresses built by European colonisers remaining in Asia and today, the Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site too.
The Galle Fort
A captivating adventure awaits those who explore this fort, only around half an hour away from properties like The Fortress Resort & Spa, an ideal base for your stay. Wandering along the cobbled streets inside the fort is like stepping back in time and you will come across Dutch-era houses, old warehouses, and the Old Gate with its British coat of arms. Protecting the city within are the huge ramparts on which you can walk along and get an idea of the fort’s layout as well as catch magical sunsets overlooking the ocean.
Other Attractions
You can head to the historical Dutch Reformed Church which dates to 1755 as well as the Maritime Museum which has exhibits on maritime history and marine ecosystems. Located within a historical Dutch building, the Galle National Museum is a great place to learn more about the city’s past; the Sudharmalaya Vihara (a Buddhist temple), Meeran Jumma Mosque, and Galle Lighthouse are worth seeing too. The Galle International Cricket Stadium is where one has a chance to watch a game of cricket from the fort’s ramparts and for a change of scenery, head to nearby Unawatuna Beach.
Shopping & Dining
Amongst the best things to do in Galle is to enjoy some shopping at stores and boutiques within the fort offering handicrafts, souvenirs, jewellery, fashion, gift items and more; popular places to shop at include Barefoot and Luv SL by Odel. When hunger strikes, there are diverse dining venues too, offering local and international cuisine; Pedlar’s Inn Cafe and Restaurant, A Minute by Tuk Tuk, Anura’s Restaurant and Royal Dutch Café are some of the options to consider.
