Ancient temples are not so hard to find in Sri Lanka, but some of these temples are not as popular as the rest. Dowa Rock Temple is one such hidden treasure worth visiting when you are in Sri Lanka.
Where is it?
This temple- one of the greatest places to visit in Bandarawela is located just a few kilometers away from the Ella town. If you stay at the Bandarawela Hotel, you may visit this on your way because it’s on Ella-Bandarawela Road.
Its historical background
King Walagamba, who is also the creator of many historical monuments that are even preserved till today has built this temple in the 01st century BC.
The Buddha Statue
What’s more important about this temple is its 38 feet Buddha Statue, yet uncompleted. This Buddha Statue has been carved in granite rock, but this is not visible to a person who takes a look at this land from a distance.
The tunnel
Behind the statue is an 11km long tunnel. People believe that the King must have used this tunnel to go to the Ravana Maha Viharaya (Ella) and Bogoda Raja Maja Viharaya, but today, this tunnel has been sealed by the authorities.
