Du Fu Cao Tang, which translates as the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu stands in remembrance of this esteemed individual who is considered to be one of China’s national treasures. Du Fu was a renowned poet who lived during the Tang Dynasty. Du Fu Cao Tang, presently a museum and park stands in honour of this acclaimed poet who is considered to have made a permanent contribution to Chinese literature.
Du Fu was actually born in the province of Henan in the year 712. After attempting a state examination in Xian and failing to secure an official post, the poet stayed for over a decade in this part of the country. A rebellion in this area forced Du Fu to flee to the city of Chengdu in the year 759. The poet made his residence at Du Fu Cao Tang, constructing a thatched cottage with help from his friends. During his period of residence here the poet produced over 240 poems which have been acclaimed as outstanding works.
During centuries of neglect this cottage became increasingly dilapidated. Eventually during the era of the Northern Song Dynasty a temple was constructed on the site to honour this important figure in the literature of China. In subsequent times the structure was renovated a number of times eventually giving the museum its present dimensions.
Today the attraction plays a dual role; in addition to honouring the individual this commemorative creation is also a tribute to the literature of the nation, taking the form of a traditional Chinese garden compound. Du Fu Cao Tang consists of an expansive compound of 59 acres and the landscaping as well as constructions found within it conforms to the Qing Dynasty style of decoration. Inside the tranquil compound streams meander gracefully; pavilions and bridges stand in serene majesty. The combination of splendid classical architecture and natural features create a truly unforgettable sight. Visitors will enjoy touring this attractive compound which stands as a tribute to the glory of Chinese literature.
