The Erawan Shrine in Bangkok is a very popular Hindu temple in the Thai capital Bangkok. Although Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation this shrine is frequented by a steady stream of worshippers. This place of worship is dedicated to Phra Phrom, the local representation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. It is also a significant tourist attraction, as it regularly hosts performances staged by traditional dance troupes which are engaged by devotees as a means of ensuring that their prayers made to the deity are answered.
The creation of the shrine is an interesting story in itself. In the 1950s the Thai government launched a project to construct an upscale hotel at this site. However the project was plagued by so many difficulties that the superstitious workers were adamant that they would not continue with the work unless the spirits of the land were appeased. Accordingly astrologers were consulted and it was decided to build a shrine in honour of the god Brahma. A splendid figure of the deity was crafted and gilded, and positioned within the shrine. After this the construction work continued without any difficulties.
The visitor will notice continuous streams of devotees arriving at the site from the break of dawn to the night time hours, making offerings like fruits, garlands of flowers and even teak wood elephants. However for many visitors the highlight of a visit to this temple would be the opportunity to watch a graceful Thai traditional dance as performed by an accomplished dance troupe. Another specialty often performed at the venue is the distinctive Chinese themed lion dance.
Bangkok is renowned for its numerous picturesque temples which often feature splendid architecture and elaborately decorated interiors. Visitors can also view the distinctive rites and ceremonies which are conducted at the temples.
Since there is so much to see and admire in the Thai capital sightseeing here is always an enthralling experience. A sightseeing cruise on the Chao Phraya River is another excellent option for visitors.
