The Etosha National Park is a popular wildlife destination in Namibia and is one of the largest national parks in Africa, and is home to a vast number of diverse species, as well as a large salt pan that is the most notable feature of the park. Here is what you need to know about the park before visiting.
About the Park
Originally a game reserve, it was designed as a national park in 1967 via an act of parliament. Spanning over an area of 22,270 km2, its name is derived from the massive Etosha pan that sprawls across the park.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is generally considered to be the best time to visit the Etosha National Park. This is the season when wildlife flocks around the waterholes, making it the best time to spot different species. Make no mistake, however, you can visit the park all year round, as each season offers something different. If you’re staying at a city hotel in Namibia, in properties such as Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino, you can make a day trip to the park with your loved ones.
Wildlife Watching
The park is famous for its diverse wildlife, boasting rare species such as rhinos, African Bush elephants, giraffes and a multitude of antelope species.
Taking a game tour lets you see these creatures up close, safely. You have a choice between taking a self-guided tour in your vehicle or exploring the park with the help of veteran park rangers, who will provide you with a lot of information about the park. Remember to adhere to park protocol and maintain a safe distance from the animals, both for your safety and theirs.
Etosha Pan
The salt pan is the most noticeable feature of the national park. It is a massive salt desert spanning 4760 km2 that covers an astonishing 23% of the park. This great landscape can be seen from various points across the park, and usually attracts a lot of animals during the dry season, when they gather around the waterholes.
