While there are many famous attractions in Xian like the Terracotta Army, one you may not have heard about is the Banpo Museum which is well worth visiting too; here’s what you need to know.
Getting There
This site is on the eastern outskirts of Xian and those staying at city centre hotels adjacent to the ancient City Wall such as Grand Park Xian can easily plan excursions here. Apart from taking a taxi, you can also make use of the metro (Line 1) to reach Banpo Station which is near the museum. Alternatively, buses including #105, 269 and 416 provide convenient access to this attraction as well.
What to Expect
Before heading to the Banpo Museum from one of the city centre-based hotels in Xian, China, it’s always good to have an idea of what to expect. This attraction has been built at the place excavations were made of the prehistoric Banpo site; discovered in the 1950s, it is one of the most well-preserved Neolithic settlements in China. You can gain insights into the Yangshao Culture and its matriarchal community and see how people lived at the time.
Site Hall & Community Village
At the site hall section, visitors will find the residential area where one can learn more about the lives of this Neolithic community. Also of note are the exhibits that focus on burial and pottery making which provide a deeper understanding of the traditions, customs and activities at the time. You can also explore a replica of the Banpo Matriarchal Community Village, which gives visitors an idea of how this ancient society functioned.
Exhibition Halls
Amongst the other highlights of the Banpo Museum are the two exhibition halls each with something different to discover. The first of these showcases unearthed relics such as sickles, axes and stone knives as well as artwork from thousands of years ago; those heading to the second hall can view any temporary exhibitions on display that provide more insights into this fascinating prehistoric culture.
