Once known to many as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka continues to mesmerise travellers to this day with its beautiful scenery and relaxed tropical vibes. From the famed tea plantations, green valleys and colonial houses of the Hill country to the golden sands of the pristine beaches, ancient cities and captivating wild jungles, Sri Lanka has something to suit anyone’s taste.
Exploring all the many hotspots is no easy feat as several places like the Sigiriya rock fortress and surfing paradise of Arugam Bay, are quite a distance from the capital Colombo; however, a fast and easy way to travel is through one of the air taxi tours in Sri Lanka, such as the Cinnamon Air tours, for instance, who provide daily flights to several cities around the country.
South of Colombo are several towns that are home to amazing beaches, colourful reefs and a variety of wildlife. Towns like Bentota and Koggala are favourite destinations due to their beaches and lakes, which are popular for water sports activities, whilst Kosgoda’s turtle hatchery draws visitors by the dozens. Head further south to city of Galle where you’ll find the historic Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site which offers colonial architecture, colourful cafes, and some of the finest views of the Indian Ocean.
If you’re in the mood to explore the hills, travel to the hill country where you’ll find cascading waterfalls amid the lush foliage of the mountain ranges, take a morning hike through Horton Plains National Park, or relax with a cup of tea in one of the many tea houses on the way up to Nuwara Eliya. From exciting leopard safaris in Yala National Park, to observing the many colourful pillars and detailed statues of Jaffna’s Hindu temples, the choices are endless.
