Originally constructed to contain Buddhist relics and historical materials brought over by the Buddhist explorer Xuanzang from India, the pagoda was built during the era of the illustrious Emperor Gaozong. It is said that Xuanzan, who was the Da Ci’en Temple’s first abbot also managed the building of the venue. Having been a 197 foot high structure in its heyday, the structure now measures 211.6 feet in height. With seven stories with two additional floors added subsequently, the pagoda resembles a square cone from the outside with intricate and elaborate interiors contained within the premises, which are considered a true masterpiece of Buddhist architecture. Built primarily of brick, the structure comprises of a winding stairwell that takes visitors to the summit to enjoy panoramic views of the city and its stunning landscape below. Arched doors adorn the four sides of each floor with Yan Liben‘s engraved statues of Lord Buddha adorning the walls. Well-known calligraphers of the time also contributed steles to the pagoda, which is named after the spirit of the bodhisattva who is said to have visited this holy venue in the guise of a wild goose.
