Are you planning on exploring one of the most exciting market complexes in Doha? Come and be amazed by the electric atmosphere and the labyrinth of stalls, in the heart of the city.
Where Will You Stay?
Having to choose from among the best hotels in Doha can be exciting and overwhelming. It’s always best to shortlist your choices based on personal preferences such as location and price. If a central location is key for instance, Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels By Tivoli is a mere 5-minute walk away!
What Can You Expect?
Apart from the stalls selling a myriad of items including jewellery, scarfs and so much more, certain stores double up as exhibits. These stalls display historical artefacts such as swords and memorabilia from the Arab world. Note that the stores close mid-day from 1 PM to 4 PM for a siesta, but the eateries remain open.
Origins of The Souq
Many centuries ago, Bedouin tradesmen would bring their livestock such as sheep and goats along with wool and other commodities to barter for other goods. While much of the ancient stalls have been revamped, those who visit can admire certain wooden beams from the original stalls that have been preserved to date.
Face Lift
It was only in the 1990s that this once forgotten Souq was given the facelift that it so badly needed. Despite the unfortunate fire which also broke out in 2003, repair and maintenance work went into restoring and revamping this epicentre of commerce. It is now without a doubt one of the most exciting souqs in the Middle East and is worth a visit.
