Overview
Situated in the Kalutara district, The Fa Hien Cave, also known as the Pahiyangala Cave is the largest cave complex in Sri Lanka. It contains the remains of a civilization that existed between the Late Pleistocene and Mesolithic period.
The Name and discovery
The site and the cave have been named after Fa Hien who was a Chinese Buddhist monk and a translator who traveled around the south Asian region visiting many sacred Buddhist sites. It has been said that he visited the cave in 399 and subsequently discovering the site.
What can you see?
Upon visiting this site today you can witness many things ranging from fossilized remains of animals and humans who lived here several thousands of years ago. You can also see remains of shelters and there is also an enormous statue of Lord Buddha and a shrine close to the site.
Getting there
