Home to one of the world’s most picturesque beaches, Maya Bay can be found in the Thai destination known as the Phi Phi Islands and here are some amazing facts about it worth knowing.
It Was Featured on The Beach
When released in 2000, the film “The Beach” directed by Danny Boyle became a hit not just because the lead actor happened to be Leonardo DiCaprio, but also because of the stunning locations used; chief amongst these was the beach at Maya Bay and travellers around the world were spellbound by this idyllic slice of paradise!
You Can Only Get There by Boat
Maya Bay is on one of the two main Phi Phi Islands known as Phi Phi Leh which can only be reached by boat. Those based at Phi Phi Don (the other main island) at properties like SAii Phi Phi Island Village, can easily visit the bay; from such a luxury hotel, Phi Phi Island excursions include longtail boat adventures to this site which also include snorkelling and insights provided by an experienced local guide.
It Reopened in January 2022
Many may not know that Maya Bay was closed for over three years before reopening on 1st January 2022. The reason for its closure was to stop the harm and damage caused to the marine ecosystem due to the excess amount of visitors. In the period that followed, the bay had time to recover and with its reopening, new rules and regulations were put in place to protect the marine biodiversity and control arrival numbers.
More Than Just Beaches to Visit
While this attraction is famed for its pristine beaches, there are diverse activities too. Amongst the best things to do in Maya Bay is to go snorkelling with thriving coral and marine life to be spotted. A specific area for swimming has been designated and depending on your type of excursion, you can enjoy diving and kayaking as well. Not to be missed is a chance to also visit the nearby Viking Cave with its ancient drawings.
