Negombo, which is popular for the beautiful sandy beaches and some of the best holiday locations in Sri Lanka, is visited by locals and tourists all year long. This city is not only famous for fine hotels, restaurants or water sports, but also for the very lucrative fish industry. The fish market on the Negombo beachfront is rated to be the second largest fish market in the island. You would find fishermen hauling their boats early in the morning with the day’s catch and offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the local fisher folk.
This is a very busy place compared to the calm atmosphere of the rest of the beaches. By about 6.00am the beach starts crowding up with fishermen and buyers; buyers vary from wholesale fishmongers, fish store owners and household customers. You would find a large array of fish, neatly stacked according to their types on shelves or pieces of paper laid on the beach. Fishermen in colourful shirts and sarongs with large straw hats shouting their hearts out to grab the attention of buyers to purchase their fish, is truly the perfect backdrop to get a feel about their trading skills. Customers have the opportunity of buying the fish whole or getting it cleaned and cut to pieces. The best part about buying fish from here is the fact that you get fresh fish for really low prices compared to what you may get in an inland store. By noon, almost all fish brought to the shore will be sold and you would see the bright smiles of fishermen confirming that their day was a fruitful one.
The endless stretch of sandy beaches, the gorgeous Indian Ocean spread to the far horizon and the opportunity for many adventurous water sports activities can be enjoyed when staying at a well placed hotel in Negombo. Club Hotel Dolphin is one such beach hotel Negombo, nestled on the beautiful Negombo beachfront, offering you and your loved ones a peaceful stay amongst luxurious comforts. It is also an ideal base from which to set off on your excursions along this idyllic coastal region where you will find a range of cultural, natural and historical attractions that provide a unique insight into the island’s rich heritage.
