The Gal Potha which is found in close proximity to the Sath Mahal Prasadaya has been at the centre of attention for centuries. Almost 27 ft in length, this massive stone slab has been carefully carved to depict wordings and figures that are quite simply a sight for sore eyes. On the side of it are found two rows of Swans while a carving of God Lakshmi adorns this imposing work of art. Historians have revealed that the writings state that the slab was carried from the city of Mihinthalaya which is a sacred city of Buddhism and placed here. Several other views expressed state that that the inscriptions depict the contributions of King Nissanaka Mall when he beautified and developed the kingdom of Polonnaruwa during his reign.
