Located about 30km from Colombo; the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, is the quaint city of Gampaha. One of Gampaha’s most iconic attractions, which has been a hit amongst nature lovers, is the Gampaha Botanical Gardens. Considered to be one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most diverse botanical gardens, this site is a green haven and serves as a micro-ecosystem in itself. With lush trees, plants and landscapes, and several species of wildlife, this botanical garden is well worth a visit.
The Gampaha Botanical Garden, also known as the Henarathgoda Botanical Garden, was built in 1876 by the British. Located just a few metres from the Gampaha Train Station, the botanical gardens were used primarily by the British for performing botanical experiments. One of the successful experiments can be seen even today; the Brazilian rubber tree planted in the garden to see whether the tree could be grown in South Asian climates. Incidentally, the tree was the first ever Brazilian rubber tree to be grown on Asian soil. The visitor experience of these gardens is simply blissful, as the site is known for its beautiful landscaping and lush greenery. The gardens are also home to over 80 species of birds, several species of small mammals, and 12 species of butterflies. The garden is great for spending a quiet evening in reflection or taking some amazing photos of nature at its finest.
