The Giac Lam Pagoda is a Buddhist pagoda built in 1744. It is located in Vietnam’s biggest city, Ho Chi Minh City, and is believed to be one of the most ancient temples in the country. As of November 1988 the Vietnamese Department of Culture classified the Giac Lam Pagoda as a historical site. The temple was constructed by Ly Thuy Long, who originated from the Minh Huong. This was at a time when Nguyen Phuc Khoat of the Nguyen Lords was the reigning monarch. At that time it (which was called Gia Dinh) was undeveloped and surrounded by jungle (although the area around the temple was cleared for a flower garden).
As time passed the area grew around the temple and was renamed Saigon and finally Ho Chi Minh. Now, more than two centuries later, the metropolis is a thriving place filled with modern buildings while the temple remains the same. The pagoda is situated in the city’s Tan Binh District, along Lac Long Quan road. It is easily accessible as it is one of the most prominent landmarks here. Tourists who find themselves with some time to spare should definitely try to visit this place.
