If you’re looking for a small getaway out of Colombo, then the ideal location for you would be Kalutara, considering its colourful market places and ethnic diversity.
The Waterfalls
While Kalutara is best known for the sea, sun and sand, a lesser known fact is that there are numerous waterfalls surrounding this region as here is where River Kalu flows into the arms of the Indian Ocean. Waterfalls of all shapes and sizes lie in different parts around Kalutara district, such as the Makeli Ella falls, Marakapu Ella falls, Maha Ella and Bala Ella fall to name a few.
Pieces of History
Richmond Castle is an iconic landmark in Kalutara with a fascinating history attached to it. The mansion was built during the 1890s and isn’t located far away from most resorts, such as AVANI Kalutara Resort. Fa Hien caves, located towards the west of Kalutara, is also of historical significance as it is deemed to be one of the oldest human settlements in south-east Asia.
Arts and Crafts
Another prominent attraction in Kalutara is “Ranjith’s Carving and Batik Museum”, which acts as both an exhibition space and a shop, simultaneously. The museum features a wide range of woodwork that is representative of traditional Sri Lankan arts and crafts.
The beaches
The southwestern region of the island consists of numerous beautiful beaches. One of the main things to do in Kalutara is to make it a point to spend some time taking in the marvellous ocean views you’re lucky enough to witness!
