An ancient town founded by the Khmer Empire is now called Khon Kaen. Existing here are the remnants of centuries of history of the founding empire displayed in the antiquated temples that managed to survive the test of time.
Phra Mahathath Kaen Nakhon
This temple is known as the ‘9 storey stupa’. Inside, you will find curio belonging to Buddhist culture. Illustrated in sketches are the stories of ancient Khon Kaen. The doors and windows are intricately chiselled to reflect the tales of the reincarnations of Lord Buddha and Brahmin deities.
Wat Thung Setthi
The temple was recently restored to be a beauty clad in gold and white. It is famous for its paintings that are splashed onto the windows. The pictures on the stained windows consist of religious figures such as Shiva and Indra (Hindu Gods) as well as fictional characters such as Disney’s Lilo and Stich, Mickey Mouse and even Darth Vader. The garden here is well known for its unique sculptures showcasing the Buddhist hell.
Phrat Kham Khaen
The name of this temple means ‘Great Stupa of tamarind heartwood’ in English. Stored here are several artefacts of Lord Buddha, therefore, the temple is an important place of worship for locals. Veritably, the city was named after this wonderful stupa. If you are accommodated in a hotel close by like AVANI Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Centre do stop by to admire the temple.
Khon Kaen National Museum
Opened in 1972, the museum contains several collections that are related to art, archaeology, and history. Antiques from ancient settlements such as tools and burial rituals, religious items and ceramics can be found here. You can learn more about the ancient cultures of empires that once ruled the area.
