Where is it?
Hakgala Botanical Gardens is located in the Central Highlands of Nuwera Eliya and part of the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve. If you’re staying at a budget accommodation in Nuwara Eliya, check with your provider such as Yoho Beds on the distance and best route to take to get here.
The myth
Legend has it that the gardens and the Hakgala Rock was one of the places where King Rawana hid Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. The garden was thus offered to Sita to be used as her pleasure gardens.
The Gardens
The Gardens is divided in to various sectors, so make sure you visit them all – Central pond & bulb garden, Rose garden, lower and upper flower garden, Glass house, fernery, rock garden and an arboretum.
Time to visit
Like with any gardens, the best time to visit is ideally in spring when the flowers are in full bloom and there’s a light crisp wind in the air. As this garden is located in the highlands of the country, the climate usually varies from 16°C to 30°C throughout the year.
