The city has an intriguing history, and has fairly ancient roots. Although Dalian is considered a fairly young city, and was only developed recently to what it is today, there has been evidence of human settlement in Dalian going as far back as 221 BC. The history of this great city is quite a rocky one since it suffered many invasions and a number of transferences regarding rule.
During the time of the Opium Wars, which occurred in the 19th century, the city was under British rule. To this day there are many heritage buildings built in the western style that visitors can explore.
Once the Sino-Japanese War took place the city’s command fell to the hands of the Japanese, who ruled over the city until the Triple Intervention by Russia, Germany and France led the Japanese to release the entire Liaodong Peninsula back to China. Some parts of the land were then leased to Russia, who set to build a port city with the intention of turning into the Far East’s equivalent of Paris.
During the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian Navy suffered a defeat at the hands of the Japanese, who once regained control of the land they once lost. After a few more battles, the city of Dalian, and the surround lands were once again under Chinese control by 1950.
If you wish to explore a truly fascinating landscape, then look no further than Dalian.
