A wondrous and magical location, Myanmar had long escaped the eye of tourism due to internal instability but has recently come into the limelight. There is so much to explore so it is important to understand the history of this magical former kingdom.
History and Pre-History
There is evidence that humans occupied modern-day Burma as far as back as 75,000 BC. The people were said to be the first over 1,500 BC, to have started making bronze, domesticating animals and farming. As a result, the region became very important in trade routes through the Middle East, China and India.
British Rule
It was after many kingdoms and dynasties ruled over Myanmar that it was finally colonised by the British in 1886. It was made a province of India and present-day Yangon was established as the capital.
World War II & Japanese Occupation
The Burmese used World War II in order to break away from British occupation when strings of strikes by university students and lay protestors were quelled violently by the British.
