History of painting in Sri Lanka

The first painting

The first evidence of the origin of painting in Sri Lanka dates back to the prehistoric times. The first traces of paintings in Sri Lanka are found in the caves of Kurullangala. Being recently discovered these artworks are ancient probably one of the oldest and well-preserved paintings in Sri Lanka.

Early art

The Sri Lankan art is very much influenced by the Indian art. After Buddhism being introduced to the country, Sri Lanka art flourished and many exquisite artworks and paintings emerged from talented artists of the ancient times. These paintings can still be witnessed on walls in several Buddhist monasteries and shrines
