The legend
According to an ancient legend, it is believed that whoever makes a wish in front of the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree will get his/her wish granted! Millions of wish makers flood the region to make their wishes, to obtain the blessings from the tree and to ask for good fortune.
The tradition
People would normally write their wishes on a yellow or orange paper and they tie it with a weight which is usually an orange – once it is tied they throw it over the tree. If the paper gets stuck to a brach without it falling, they believe their wish would become true soon.
Conservation of the tree
Since many people started putting up their wishes on the tree, its branches became heavier and more fragile. In the year 2005, the tree could bear no more and finally collapsed injuring two individuals. Then onwards, the government started discouraging this practice and placed a 15-foot plastic tree as a substitute for people to use that tree instead of the original one for their wishes.
Getting there
The tree is located at a place called Lam Tsuen in Tai Po New Town, Hong Kong and you can reach here by bus, taxi or by train. It would be much easier if you are stationed at any of the 4 star hotels in Hong Kong the likes of Park Hotel Hong Kong which is just a 30-minute drive away. Transportation also can be arranged to the site directly from the hotel.
