The Hong Kong Space Museum is a planetarium and exhibition space providing information on everything to do with space, the solar system and earth. Its arresting architecture has been one of the most prominent sights on the Tim Sha Tsui waterfront ever since it’s opening in 1980. The domed planetarium comprises of a Space Theater where regular shows takes place, the Hall of Space Science and the Hall of Astronomy that have permanent exhibits on various aspects of astronomy and space exploration. The facility has one of the first OMNIMAX film projection systems in the east and the world’s first fully automated control system in the Space Theater. Daily 3D and OMNIMAX shows on a variety of exciting subjects are shown here. These have included what influences earth’s climate, Mayan astronomy, cosmic collisions, stars, the big bang, space travel, gas giants among others. A popular monthly program here is the Night Sky that allows visitors to learn about seasonal constellations under the simulated night sky.
The Hall of Space Science has a permanent exhibition on history of astronomy, space travel with special areas for many types of space vehicles and space stations, science fiction and future space travel. The exhibits in the Hall of Astronomy include areas dedicated to observational astronomy, the solar system and solar science, the stars and the universe.
Equipment upgrades at the Space Museum allow for better and longer shows. In addition to the OMNIMAX film projection system originally installed an 8K digital planetarium projection system was installed in 2009. This was upgraded to a 3D full dome projection system with 8 ultra high definition projectors using interference filtering technology to produce clear 3D images. The Space Museum has developed into the most important local institution engaged in popularizing astronomy in Hong Kong.
