At the end of a busy day, locals and tourists alike tend to gather at some of the coffee shops and snack bars in Colombo to chill out. Another good place to unwind after a long day is Independence Square, located in Colombo 07. The Independence Square is a combination of a green park and a jogging track. Some have made the place their daily workout spot. Most evenings families are seen to gather with food and drinks in order to spend some time with each other and get some fresh air. Children run around freely, ride their bicycles or play at the mini playground. On the benches under the large shady trees, you will find loving couples having their little moments. As it gets dark the jogging track is lit up with the many solar lights that are planted on the sides. Irrespective of gender or age there are many who take a light walk or jog to stay healthy. Even after the sun goes down, the Independence Square provides a homely atmosphere which puts you at ease.
Right in the centre is the memorial hall that was built in the year 1948. This is in remembrance of achieving independence. The structure has been built in an extraordinary style. It is said that the design is related to the last Kandyan dominion.
