Not far from the island lies a tall islet that takes the shape of a “nail” or “spike” called Ko Tapu. The islet stands tapering alone in not too deep green waters.
Khao Phing Khan islands were not well recognised before 1974, soon after which tourist started flooding in numbers. As a measure of conserving Ko Tapu from erosion, there is a ban on tourist boats travelling within a given distance.
Khao Phing islands are covered by forests and also some sandy beaches and caves can be found here. There are myths associated with the formation of Ko Tapu , among which one is that a fishermen who was unable to secure a catch one day kept catching a nail in his net and to his disappointment and anger he cut the nail in half with a sword and one half jumped in the sea and formed the Ko Tapu island. However scientist attribute it to tectonic movements and have found that a rupture could have formed the group of islands which later due to erosion and other natural factors formed varying shapes.
The island is a host to evergreen tree forests and some of the plants that grow on Ko Tapu can survive without soil and can be seen growing out of cracks in these rocks. The islands are also hosts to an array of bio diversity.
