Fondly referred to as one of the seven wonders of Sri Lanka, the Kanniya Hot Water Wells located in the beautiful coastal town of Trincomalee. There are many Sri Lanka beach resorts around the area to stay in and Jungle Beach is perhaps one of the most suitable Trincomalee hotels to choose for this purpose. The waters of these springs are considered to have medicinal properties that are said to have beneficial effects on skin diseases, rheumatism and arthritis and because of this, they draw quite a lot of visitors throughout the year. The wells are built in a square shape and are only three or four feet deep. Each well is of varying temperatures from boiling to very mild and the bottom of the well is made of quartz, sand and gravel because of which the water is clear and clean.
Many a legend has been woven around these mysterious seven wells. One very famous legend is that King Ravana struck the earth seven times with his sword and in those spots the springs appeared. Another favourite fable is that Lord Vishnu conjured up the wells so that King Ravana can perform the last rites for his mother Kanniya as he heard of her alleged demise. Another belief is that this was once part of a monastery and the scattered ruins around the wells bear witness to this very possible theory.
