The splendid Kapitan Keling Mosque is a noteworthy Muslim place of worship located within George Town in Penang. This handsome place of worship is in fact the largest of its kind in the city and draws a steady stream of devotees as well as sightseers. This shrine was created at the turn of the 19th century through the initiative of the local headman, Caudeer Mohideen who represented the community of the Muslims of Indian origin. Interestingly this magnificent mosque was conceived and designed by an accomplished architect from Germany, Henry Neubronner.
The earlier building which stood at the site was no more than a modest brick construction in direct contrast to the majestic building which stands today. Now an unmistakable landmark, the mosque always captures the attention of the observer with its elaborate Moghul-themed domes, decorated with stars and crescents. Another noteworthy feature is the splendid Gothic, Roman and Moorish arches which add to the visual impact of the edifice. The mosque’s towering elegant minaret perfectly complements the grandeur of the structure.
Kapitan Keling Mosque features a grand chandelier, exquisite panels of calligraphy and attractive windows boasting stained glass art work, prominently displaying the Star of David. The cream-hued building is particularly beautiful in the hours of dusk, framed picturesquely against the vividly coloured sky.
Throughout this attractive place of worship you will see Arabesque designs and artworks featuring geometric patterns and floral-themed motifs. The marble inlaid floors are covered with numerous rugs used for prayers. The visitor will see numerous devotees engaged in prayer after cleansing themselves at the pool used for ablutions, or expressing quiet thoughts in the prayer area.
As might be expected this mosque conforms to the time-honoured Kiblat rule, which decrees that a mosque must face the direction of Mecca, as should the Muslim faithful when praying. It is particularly crowded during Fridays and the Muslim festivals. The grand appearance and tranquil ambience of the place of worship make it a pleasure to visit.
