Koh Tao Island

Koh Tao or Ko Tao Island belongs to the country of Thailand and has a land area of approximately 21km2. Situated close to the Gulf of Thailand it has become a famed tourist attraction that is known best as a scuba diving and snorkelling hot spot. Interestingly the Island is named after its peculiar turtle like form and also because it is a well known breeding territory for the Green Turtle and the Hawsbill turtle. At one time the creatures became endangered and sickly due to the development in the area. But today a breeding project has restored the eco system and ensured their protection and survival.

Diving is probably the most enjoyed activity of Ko Tao. The conditions and facilities for diving had increased greatly in the recent years and have resulted in a higher number of visitors to the dive sites. Chumpon Pinnacle placed west of the Island is the most sought after dive site and is known to display the rare bull shark and whale shark. The isle is also becoming quite a renowned game fishing site. The gamers target king mackerel, trevally, marlin, cobia, snapper and sailfish.

Apart from the water sports, the Koh Tao Island is also visited by many for rock climbing, bouldering and hiking. The beautiful coastline of this tropical paradise is also home to some breathtaking beaches. Among them, the finest is said to be Sairee located on the west coast of Ko Tao. Sairee is a white, soft, sandy shoreline. This 1.7km stretch is known for its palm fringed beaches and rocky boulders. While some sunbathe under the coconut leaves others have fun climbing the granite boulders. Travellers could also escape to the shady forest area to escape the crowded tourist areas.
