Animal lovers will know the joy felt when those small hatchlings break out of their shells and take their first steps out towards the never-ending expanse of ocean. No bigger than your palm, these cute creatures are endangered species and so it is up to us humans to protect their existence.
The Kosgoda hatchery
For both locals and foreigners staying in boutique hotels in Sri Lanka close by, for example, Saman Villas, make it a point to visit the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda. The owner of the hatchery, Dudley, is quite friendly, so you will be able to volunteer too just like the others who are visiting.

Be part of the release
The most exciting part about visiting the Turtle Hatchery in Kosgoda is the part where you get to release the little hatchlings out to the sea at sunset. The staff picks out the baby turtles that are ready to take on the great blue and put them in a bucket where you will release them on the shores of wet sand.
What the project is all about
So, according to the owner of the place, eggs are rescued and brought to their conservation facility where they are left to hatch away from predators. The program aims to maximise the number of baby turtles reaching the sea.
Fact
It is said that very few turtles are able to survive and reach adulthood. This is why each egg and each individual turtle matters when it comes to protecting their species. This is all taken care of through donations and volunteering.
