Renowned as a popular tourist resort town since the 1960s, the charming little enclave known as Kovalam on India’s southern coast has won many fans the world over. It is situated in the state of Kerala, a scenic locality that boasts many a luxury Kerala resort to host your travels in the region. A particularly fine 3 star hotel in Kerala that is worthy of mention is the Poovar Island Resort, whose tasteful interiors and attentive hospitality provide the perfect base for your adventures in the area. Kovalam, although discovered as a charming beach fronting the sapphire Indian seas during the 1920s, did not rise to prominence until the 1960s, when it was used as a popular hang-out spot for hippies traversing the “hippie trail” on the way to the paradise isle of Sri Lanka.
The little town quickly shot to fame as an idyllic stretch of sand, surf, & sun that offered some sweet waves and a chill atmosphere. The Kovalam coastal line extends up to 17km, and its crescent shape presents three unique beaches fronting the Indian blue that added to its fame. The beach in the farthest south is called “Lighthouse Beach” with the eponymous building perched atop a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. It is the most frequented of the beaches. Eve’s Beach, also known as Hawa Beach, sits comfortably in the middle of the sandy stretch, and it births a calm blue bay that is ideal for swimming, peddling, and a host of other fun water sports. The third beach, Samudra, is separated from the other two by a promontory which means that it does not see any tourists, and the local fishermen ply their trade here. Kovalam is also known as a health & wellness oasis, due to the large number of resorts and Ayurvedic centres that have emerged in recent years, making this an ideal getaway when you are vacationing on the South Indian coast.
