Considered an architectural and artistic masterpiece, the Kuttam Pokuna of Anuradhapura is a great example that stands evidence to the great hydrological engineering techniques of the ancient Sinhalese. The Kuttam Pokuna, signifying two ponds placed side by side is comprised of a large pool and a smaller pool, originally intended as bathing pools for monks residing at nearby monasteries. There are plenty of Sri Lanka hotels that one could seek accommodation in while they explore the century old history that this country has within its pearly borders and Heritance Kanadalama is a beautiful Sri Lanka hotel known for its wonderful architecture as well as the magnanimous service rendered to its guests. Although often referred to as twin pools, the larger pool is 132 ft by 51 ft, while the smaller pool is 91 ft by 51 ft. Flights of steps have been constructed on all sides of the pools as well as embankments on different levels to enable bathing with the use of pots or other such utensils. These steps and embankments are beautifully adorned with punalas (pots of abundance) and ornate scrolls. Set amidst a beautifully landscaped garden, one can only imagine what they must have looked like 1200 years ago.
