1). How the Castle Came to Be
Don Arthur De Silva Wijeysinghe was the son of a wealthy planter who was sent to Britain for his schooling. When he completed his studies, he was bestowed the title of Mudaliyar by the King and he returned to Sri Lanka to take up his rank and he built the Richmond Castle after being inspired by his former school friend’s palace, the Maharaja of Ramnad in India.
2). The Tragic Tale
After Arthur married, he and his wife had every material pleasure in the world but alas, no child. Later on, they separated, and Arthur resided in room 77 of the Queen’s Hotel in Kandy, never to return to his estates ever again. If you’re looking for a Wadduwa Hotel, there are several like Taprobana Wadduwa for example.
3). Architectural Fusion
The Castle was a perfect blend of influence from the East and West. It had 99 doors and 38 windows!
4). After Arthur
After Arthur passed away, he bequeathed the property to the Public Trustee Department with the wish that it be turned into a children’s home.
