It is not a surprise that the world’s largest Persian carpet is found in the Sheik Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi which is the country’s grand mosque and the largest mosque in the UAE. The world’s largest luxurious carpet is amidst appropriate surroundings in an elegant building that brings together some of the best elements of Middle Eastern and Moorish religious architecture whilst fulfilling the objective of the builders to involve artisans and materials from many countries. The value of the carpet is such that it was heavily insured from the commencement of the weaving up to delivery.
Several thousand skilled village craftswomen from three Iranian villages worked two shifts to complete this humungous work of art designed by the noted Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi. The Iran Carpet Company was responsible for ensuring that the highest quality of materials went into its making and for the quality of the finished product. They were also responsible for cleaning and putting together the nine parts of the 6,000 square meter hand knotted carpet. Estimated to be worth US$ 8.5 million, the 40 ton wool and cotton carpet was almost two years in the making. Currently the World’s largest carpet, a fact endorsed by Guinness World Records, it features traditional Persian motifs of flowers and birds and beautifully blended natural dyes. A predominantly green border in an all over design and five big and small medallions in tones of maroon, orange, and tan with touches of dark and light blue makes up this work of art. It is indeed a beautiful addition to the main prayer hall which can accommodate 7,000 worshipers. The mosques is said to receive about 2,000 visitors a day just to admire this beautiful piece of art. The project gave a much needed boost to the rug industry in north east Iran which is a famed carpet making region.
